My name is Tom Fulp, I'm 22, and I live at the edge of West Philly (the edge
of Drexel's campus).

-where did the idea for Newgrounds come from?
Newgrounds as a name started years ago as a fanzine I published, called "New
Ground". When I got on the web, it carried over as my on-line branding. I
never thought I would have a site that was so popular - I was just goofing
off in the beginning. I enjoyed making sick stuff for people to laugh at,
and it just kept growing from there!
-so what is Newgrounds.com?
Newgrounds is an entertainment site with a focus on Flash and the
Flash-making community!
-You mentioned somewhere that Newgrounds.com is now a full-time job for you.
Have you finished school and made this your job? And how do you support
yourself through the site?
I finished 4 out of 5 years at Drexel, but have been postponing classes due
to the amount of work involved in running the site. I hope to make time to
continue classes later. The site generates enough ad revenue to support me
and a small staff.
-You seem to have aquired a little community of die-hard Newgrounds fans.
You even have a fan club. What do you think about all the attention the
site and you are getting?
I love it! I hope it never stops. As long as there are hardcore fans, the
site will continue to flourish. The day people stop caring, NG will have to
close its doors!
-What changes have happened for Newgrounds.com?
A total site overhaul was launched in November. The frontpage is a
little more like Slashdot, where people in charge can post news on the
frontpage (so it has several different news pieces listed
chronologically on the front).
The entire Grounds Gold system is going to be revamped. What is now Gold
will become "experience points", and you will get them by voting on movies
in The Portal. The more experience you have, the more your votes will be
worth. Gold will now be something new that you aquire by contributing to the
site (either Flash movies, or by creating hot threads on the BBS, etc.)...
You will be able to spend and gamble your gold to buy secret access and
abilities on the site.
There are several on-line games on the way. The first will probably be an
on-line version of Pico vs. Uberkids where you play other users on-line. The
rest are somewhat top-secret for the time being!
